Silica sand (industrial sand) is rounded high-purity quartz (SiO2) sand deposited by natural processes. This industrial Sand for Sealcoat is used to toughen and acts as a filler for professional seal coating mix designs. This white industrial sand additive is a rounded very pure quartz sand. Sealer mix designs are mixed with additives that typically include sand with a minimum of 2-4 lbs per gallon for a commercial-grade mix of sealers. All specifications are different and require different amounts of sand as well as chemical additives to toughen the surface or for faster drying.
When added to the seal coating mix, industrial sand improves the surface’s traction. Without sand added, even light rain or a little runoff from a sprinkler system can make the surface slippery. Anyone walking across the seal coated surface could easily slip and fall, and drivers may find that their vehicles skid on the pavement causing injury and liability. This increases your risk of a lawsuit should an injury or damage occur on your property.
Sand improves safety in another way. In addition, without sand, the mix may not have enough solid content. The mix will be too liquid and runny. This makes it virtually impossible to achieve a smooth, even application of the proper depth. The seal coating will wear off much faster than it should.
